ABOUT US

Hair of the Dog is a 501(c) (3) non-profit foster-based animal rescue, committed to rescuing homeless, abandoned, medically in-need, and at-risk large breed senior dogs, and ensuring that they spend their golden years in homes with families who love them.

There is an ever-growing plight of homeless animals being surrendered to shelters and dumped on the streets. Senior dogs are particularly at risk for poor outcomes when they enter shelters. Senior dogs get adopted at a significantly lower rate, with ASPCA reporting an adoption rate of a mere 25 percent. Taking longer to get adopted, if at all, means that these senior dogs suffer longer at the shelter.

Often times, senior dogs end up in shelters because their human companion can no longer care for them, whether it is because they passed away, moved into assisted living, or lack the financial means. Regardless of the reason why they are no longer with their original owners, these senior dogs should not have to live out their golden years on the hard cement floor of a shelter.

Senior dogs make wonderful companions – more mellow, better mannered, and quicker to adjust to their new homes than younger dogs – yet they are too often overlooked by potential adopters.  These dogs have been part of a family for most of their lives. They just want that same feeling again, and they will give back the love they are given tenfold. At Hair of the Dog, our mission is to provide safe and loving homes for these large breed senior dogs who have been displaced from their homes or abandoned, and ensure that they spend their golden years in homes with families who love them. Hair of the Dog serves the counties of Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside and Orange.

While our primary focus is on senior dogs, we do take in dogs of all ages when the occasion or circumstance calls for it. Through our rescue efforts, we aim to foster a community that celebrates the unique qualities of senior dogs while also offering a lifeline to their younger counterparts in need.

Since Hair of the Dog is a foster based rescue organization, we do not have a shelter facility or physical location. We depend solely on foster families to care for our rescue dogs while we find loving forever homes. Our foster program is designed to help dogs get out of the shelters and off the streets, give them a second chance at finding a home, a chance they may not receive otherwise. However, when we are looking to rescue a dog, we cannot do so unless we have a committed foster home so please consider opening your heart and home to a foster dog.

Hair of the Dog relies on donations and fundraising to help dogs in need. Since Hair of the Dog is a volunteer owned, operated, and managed nonprofit organization, 100% of your donation goes to helping homeless and abandoned dogs.

The expression, “it’s going to the dogs” has a new meaning. So please support our cause and donate today. It will make a world of difference to a senior pup in need.
